More witnesses for Vic ex-soldier murder

A pre-trial hearing for a former Australian soldier charged with murdering a former bikie in Melbourne will be held off as prosecutors track down further witnesses.

Lachlan Floyd, 29, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court via videolink on Thursday, charged with murdering Stuart Townsend, 26, in February.

Police allege Mr Townsend, who had been recently released from prison on bail, was shot in a park in suburban Hughesdale in broad daylight.

Another man drove Mr Townsend to Monash Medical Centre and carried him inside but he died shortly after with multiple wounds to the neck and back.

On Thursday, prosectors sought a four-week delay in the case, to track down further witnesses that may be important to Floyd's upcoming committal hearing.

Defence barrister Theo Magazis agreed the extra time would be advantageous to the defence, which would argue other people linked to Mr Townsend were present when he was killed.

Floyd has previous links to motorcycle gangs, while Mr Townsend was a former member of the Finks but was kicked out over his excessive drug use.

Floyd, from Ascot Vale, was remanded to reappear on August 25 for a further committal mention.
