Thirty-six homes and over 100 businesses will be acquired as part of Victoria's biggest road project.

The planning approvals process for the North East Link project has begun, with the state government releasing project details for public comment on Wednesday.

A total of 36 houses and 103 businesses in the Bulleen industrial zone are expected to be acquired, Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said.

"We're delivering Victoria's biggest ever road project through built up urban areas. That presents challenges and the environment effects statement will give people a chance to have their say," she said.

The project aims to fix the missing link between the Eastern Freeway and the M80 Ring Road, cutting travel times, removing over 15,000 trucks a day from local roads and providing a faster trip to the airport from the east.

Public submissions close on June 7.
