Windy commute home for Victorians

Victorians are being advised to secure loose items and park away from trees as the state prepares for more damaging winds.

Winds around 50 to 60km/h with damaging peak gusts of around 90km/h are expected to develop on Tuesday evening as people start their commute home.

The SES has received 326 calls for help since 9am Monday, with around half the calls related to trees falling on roads.

Three people died on Monday night in separate crashes where cars veered off the road and crashed into trees.

"Drive to conditions as strong winds can bring down trees and power lines onto the road creating dangerous and unexpected hazards," Victorian SES chief officer operations Trevor White said on Tuesday.

"Do not park or seek shelter under trees as winds can blow down branches without warning.

"Remember to tie down any loose items around your property like trampolines and garden furniture if it's safe to do so."

The Bureau of Meteorology says elevated areas are most at risk of damaging winds, especially the peak of Mt Dandenong.

A chance of rain and hail is also expected in Melbourne in the late afternoon and evening but nothing more than a couple of millimetres.

After days of bad weather in Victoria, conditions look like they will improve by late Wednesday.

"There will still be the odd shower or two about for the coming days but it won't be as windy or as cold," senior forecaster Dean Stewart told AAP.

Temperatures will progressively rise in the second half of the week, with Saturday and Sunday expected to reach 17C in Melbourne.
