Vic laws to crush lethal monkey bikes

Illegally-ridden monkey bikes could be seized and crushed under new laws to be introduced into parliament a year after Melbourne nurse Andrea Lehane was struck and killed.

The death of the 34-year-old mother of two sparked anger in the community and led to the proposed laws which will crack down on the miniature motorbikes.

"There's two families in the past 18 months that today still grieve the loss of a loved one because of these wretched things," Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters on Tuesday.

Ms Lehane was struck and killed by a monkey bike outside a Carrum Downs shopping centre in September 2015.

There's also been an earlier death linked to the mini bikes.

Police will now have the power to seize and crush a monkey bike that is being ridden on the road or in a car park. Riders could also be fined more than $3000.

"For years Victoria Police has been challenged by youths on mini bikes in our suburbs, harassing people on the footpaths and on the roads," assistant commissioner Doug Fryer told reporters on Tuesday.

"(Now) if we come across someone riding one of these bikes we can seize it.

"Some of these bikes cost as little as $200 online but go up to 80km/h - they really are a dangerous weapon."

Monkey bikes will remain legal for use on private property such as a gated farm.

Hundreds of monkey bikes that failed safety standards have already been crushed in Victoria.

Victoria Police received 6000 calls about monkey bikes in 2015.

Caleb Jakobsson has been committed to stand trial charged with culpable driving causing the death of Ms Lehane. He was 18 at the time.
