Victorian drug kingpin Tony Mokbel has been discharged from Royal Melbourne Hospital over his jail yard stabbing, but is yet to be returned to prison as he continues his recovery at another facility.

Mokbel, 53, was attacked in Victoria's maximum security Barwon Prison by two fellow inmates on February 11, leaving him fighting for life.

Mokbel left the hospital on Wednesday in a stable condition, a Royal Melbourne Hospital spokeswoman told AAP.

"He's no longer here as a patient," she said.

It's understood Mokbel has not been returned to jail and is continuing to receive treatment at another hospital.

In Victoria, health services for male prisoners are contracted out to a secure ward at St Vincent's hospital.

Two men, both 21, have been charged over the assault in which Mokbel was allegedly stabbed and his head reportedly stomped on.

Comment is being sought from Corrections Victoria.
