Mexicans face Vic court over drugs import

Two Mexican men have faced a Melbourne court after they allegedly imported 300kg of cocaine into the state.

Eduardo Radamez Chavez Gonzalez and Gabriel Altamirano Galindo, both in their 30s, were arrested in November after authorities seized the drugs, worth $105 million, allegedly hidden in pallets of cocoa and coffee powder.

The pair faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday for a committal hearing to determine if they will go to trial.

Shortly after their arrest, they were charged with importing a commercial quantity of cocaine.

Gonzalez also faced an additional charge of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of cocaine.

The court was told there was no doubt "someone imported a sizeable amount of cocaine" into Australia - the question was whether Gonzalez and Galindo were involved.

The court was also told the pair was involved in a food importation business, bringing raw and organic "superfoods" from South America to Australia, including cocoa, salsa and coffee.

Gonzalez was described by a business associate as a "switched on", "enthusiastic" entrepreneur who was well-dressed man who wore good suits.

Police allegedly found the drug haul during a raid on the Altona business in November.

A joint federal and state investigation into Gonzalez started after he was first arrested at Melbourne Airport the same month allegedly in possession of a small quantity of cocaine.

Galindo was arrested after police raided homes at Port Melbourne and Balaclava.
