A driver who put his $330,000 Mercedes on one of the "silly settings" has had his luxury car impounded after allegedly hooning on Melbourne's streets.

A 35-year-old Doveton man allegedly started fishtailing through traffic and revving his Mercedes coupe loudly while driving in Southbank, near Melbourne's CBD after 11am on Monday.

When he was pulled over, the man told an officer he was just "having a bit of fun" and had the car on one of the "silly settings", police say.

The car was impounded for a month at a cost of $873.

The man is expected to be charged on summons with a range of traffic offences, including improper use of a car.
