A Melbourne woman has been injured after her laptop’s battery exploded while it was charging, sparking a small fire inside her bedroom overnight.

Firefighters were called to the home on Prospect Hill Road, Canterbury, just after midnight and found several spot fires inside the woman’s bedroom.

It is believed the blaze was sparked by her laptop overheating after being left on continuous charge, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) said in a statement.

9NEWS understands the computer’s battery had been purchased online and imported from overseas.

The woman, aged in her 20s, was treated for injuries at the scene but did not require hospitalisation.

The incident has prompted the MFB to advise people to purchase only “genuine computer components and follow manufacturers’ instructions.”

Investigations are ongoing.
