Melbourne's public transport chaos isn't over with train strikes to go ahead next week after Thursday's tram strikes.

Rail, Tram and Bus Union members at Metro Trains will follow their tram-driving colleagues and strike on September 4 from 10am to 2pm.

"We do not want to inconvenience the travelling public but (Metro) left us with no choice," union secretary Luba Grigorovitch said on Thursday.

"Metro Trains has threatened to dock our members' pay and stand our members down."

A Metro spokeswoman said they were required by law to deduct pay when an employee doesn't perform their role due to industrial action.

"This is not a threat, this is a matter of complying with the law," she said.

"We maintain the view that any industrial action is unnecessary and will do all that we can to avoid any disruption for our customers."

Tram drivers threw the CBD into chaos on a wet day with a four-hour strike during the middle of Thursday.
