Vic train deal yet to emerge

Final touches on a deal to end a long-running dispute between Melbourne train drivers and Metro Trains have yet to emerge.

While the government and Metro announced they had reached a deal on Friday night, the Rail, Tram and Bus Union said that was not the case.

But the union called off train strikes proposed for AFL grand final week, which would have included refusing to check myki cards on grand final day.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan says the union and Metro agreed in-principle on the major issues on Friday, and expects them to come to an agreement by Monday night.

"There are a number of other second and third tier issues, as I understand it, that are being worked through today," Ms Allan told reporters on Monday.

"I've also been advised that these are matters that should be relatively straightforward to resolve."

Ms Allan said she was taking both parties at their word that the major issues had been agreed.

Train workers have already gone on strike once as they fought against changes to rostering and training.

Melbourne also suffered through two tram strikes before the RTBU agreed a new pay deal with Yarra Trams.
