Young Melb men's train deaths investigated

Detectives are continuing to piece together the final moments of two young men killed in front of a Melbourne train on a straight section of track.

A 21-year-old Point Cook man and a 20-year-old Hoppers Crossing man were on the rails at Altona Meadows when struck by the city-bound service just before midnight on Thursday.

Detective Sergeant Alistair Boyd says police have ruled out suspicious circumstances and suggestions the men jumped onto the tracks from a nearby bridge, a regular graffiti target.

Describing the scene as a "definite tragedy", Sgt Boyd has told reporters the driver saw the men and applied the emergency brakes as quickly as he could.

"Trains are a large object and they're deadly - train tracks are a very dangerous place," he said.

The traumatised driver underwent counselling on Friday.

The deaths occurred on a stretch of track where trains can be seen and heard coming from a distance.

The train involved was travelling within the 65 km/h limit, police said.
