Melbourne to crown Moomba's King and Queen

Secrecy is tight around the unveiling of this year's king and queen of the Moomba festival in Melbourne.

The two well-known but as yet undisclosed Melbourne identities will take their seats on the Moomba throne down by the Yarra River on Wednesday at a launch presided over by Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.

The program for the three day festival over the Labor Day long weekend will also be announced.

Every year a carnival kicks-off the Moomba festival on the Friday before the March long weekend, this time starting on March 10.

Fireworks are expected to cap-off each night after events such as the Moomba parade and theatre shows.

The Birdman Rally and the Moomba Master's water skiing event is also expected to return for spectator's watching from the banks of the Yarra River.
