Despite higher than average rainfall over the past week, Melbourne's water storage level has dropped below 60 per cent for the first time in five years.

The state's dams are now 59.6 per cent full, compared with 69.4 per cent at the same time last year, Melbourne Water says in its weekly water report.

That's a difference of 176 billion litres.

Catchment rainfall during the past week was 69.3 per cent above the long-term average but flows into dams remained below average.
