The mystery of a rank odour in Melbourne's west reported in mid-January may have been solved.

The Environment Protection Authority says a combination of rotting seaweed and exposed mudflats during an extreme low tide is the likely cause of the foul pong.

The EPA had received about 400 calls from people in the western suburbs complaining about the smell, which was described as sewage or sulphur.
