Melbourne's coldest two days in 17 years

Melbourne has shivered through two of its coldest consecutive mornings in 17 years.

Melburnians woke up to 1.8C on Monday morning, following a chilly 1.4C on Sunday.

"It hasn't been this cold for two consecutive days since August 1997, with the 4th of August at 0.3C and the 5th at 0.8C," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster James Taylor said.

People in outer suburbs really felt the frost, with minus 2C in Croydon and Coldstream on Monday morning.

It was minus 1.2C at Avalon Airport.

Residents in Victoria's regional cities experienced a freezing morning with temperatures dropping to minus 4.1C in Ballarat, minus 3.8C in Bendigo and minus 2.8C in Shepparton.

The cold snap won't last long, with Melbourne set to defrost to a top of 15C by Monday afternoon.
