Melbourne man jailed for shooting stranger

A young Melbourne man has been jailed for shooting a stranger in the back and head after tailgating him in his car.

Stefano Loschiavo, 35, drove himself to hospital on October 11 last year after suffering multiple non-life threatening gunshot wounds at Thomastown.

He had been tailgated by Dylan Aslan, 22, and Jahad El Zayat, 23, after Aslan saw the victim leaving a friend's home.

El Zayat drove into the rear of Mr Loschiavo's car with his Commodore before Aslan approached and fired a sawn-off shotgun through the rear driver's side window.

Mr Loschiavo drove himself to the Epping Northern Hospital with two open wounds in the back of his head and five open wounds in his back.

Meanwhile, the two younger men drove home, hid the gun in a wall cavity, barricaded the door and washed their clothes before they were arrested.

"This ordeal was no doubt a terrifying one for the victim," County Court of Victoria judge David Sexton said while sentencing the pair on Friday.

"The actions of Mr Alsan were totally unprovoked. There was absolutely no connection between Mr Aslan and the victim."

He said Aslan was on a community corrections order at the time. This had been imposed after he drove through McDonald's with a BB gun and was charged with firearm possession.

Aslan was jailed for two years and nine months in the County Court of Victoria on Friday after pleading guilty to intentionally causing injury and being a prohibited person in possession of a shotgun.

His had previously been charged with attempted murder, but the charge was downgraded.

He must serve a minimum of one year and 10 months before he is released, and has already spent 387 days in pre-sentence detention.

El Zayat, who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and assisting an offender, was released from custody on Friday after being sentenced to 387 days in jail - time already served.

He is now subject to a 12-month community corrections order.
