A man charged with the murder of a 41-year-old woman allegedly called his stepfather from a Melbourne suburban hospital and told him "there's a body in the house", a court has been told.

Luke Sydney McLennan, 33, made a brief out of sessions court appearance at Melbourne West Police Station on Sunday night, accused of murdering the woman in a Hallam home on Saturday.

Detective Senior Constable Julio Salerno told the bail justice that on February 20, McLennan, who is a patient at Dandenong Hospital, made a call from the hospital to his stepfather and told him "there's a body in the house".

Snr Const Salerno said the stepfather then alerted police, who found the body of a 41-year-old woman in the Hallam home.

McLennan, who was wearing a blue forensic suit and had bare feet, told the bail justice he suffered from schizophrenia and was on psychiatric medications.

He was remanded in custody to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
