Melbourne Lost Dogs Home boss sacked

Two senior officials at Melbourne's Lost Dogs Home have been sacked as a government inquiry into the home continues.

Managing director Dr Graeme Smith has been sacked, while shelter manager Sue Conroy has reportedly also been dismissed.

The home is being investigated over concerns it euthanases too many dogs and cats.

Acting CEO Vince Haining put out a statement revealing Dr Smith had left the organisation.

"I understand that this news will come as a surprise to many in The Lost Dogs Home community," Mr Haining said on Wednesday.

Dr Smith said the dismissal was in the hands of his lawyers and he wouldn't reveal the reasons for it.

"It's got nothing to do with the government inquiry," Dr Smith told Fairfax radio.

He joined the home in 1986 has been the face of the organisation for almost three decades.

Dr Smith said he would challenge his sacking in the courts.

Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford called for the inquiry after being inundated with concerned calls and emails about the home in January.
