Melbourne gets relief from autumn heat

Melbourne's autumn heatwave has come to an end, but the north of the state is set to sweat for a few more days.

Thursday should bring a top of 22C and a 90 per cent chance of rain with a possible thunderstorm for Melbourne, after days of unseasonably high temperatures in the 30s.

"It is looking like much cooler conditions overall, even a bit of rain, we could see up to 10mm around Melbourne," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Scott Williams said.

"At last a drink for the gardens after the hot spell."

While temperatures are forecast to subside in northern Victoria, the heatwave has not gone completely, Mr Williams said.

"It's still well above average temperatures in northern Victoria," he said.

Temperatures in the low 30s are expected in parts of the Mallee, Northern Country, and North East for Thursday.

Mr Williams said storm activity could continue over the weekend, particularly in the eastern parts of Victoria.

The CFA has dropped the fire danger ratings from very high down to low to moderate for most of the state from Thursday.

A high fire alert will be in place for the Mallee and North East districts.
