A passenger has had a nightmare cab ride after his driver twice passed out en route to a Melbourne hotel.

The 43-year-old Queenslander got into the cab at Melbourne airport on Monday night.

Soon after the driver lost consciousness and the taxi hit a number of concrete bollards.

No one was injured and the driver said he was fine to continue to drive.

But before long after the taxi slowed and was heading straight for another group of bollards.

The passenger leaned over and pulled the handbrake to stop the car, Victoria police said on Tuesday.

Realising the driver wouldn't make it to his destination, the passenger moved him and jumped into the driver's seat, taking control of the cab.

After getting to the hotel, the passenger called police, who expect to charge a 24-year-old Wyndham Vale man with a range of traffic offences.
