Melbourne buses targeted by slingshots

Police are investigating after metal balls were fired from slingshots into buses in Melbourne's east, landing one driver in hospital.

The bus driver, aged in his 60s, was driving down Huntingdale Road in Mount Waverley about 3.20pm on Tuesday when one of the metal balls smashed through his windscreen and hit him in the head.

He was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.

The bus was one of six hit on the same route over three to four hours, police say.

They are calling on a number of passengers who left the bus to come forward as they continue their investigation.

Transit Senior Sergeant Andrew Foot said the attacks were potentially dangerous.

"They are extremely serious and the potential for further serious incidents to occur if the driver lost control and struck another car," Sen Sgt Foot told reporters on Wednesday.

"Given the random nature of it, we certainly want these people apprehended as soon as possible."

An information caravan will be set up at Huntingdale Road on Friday.
