Melbourne bridge may get a New York update

A plan to landscape a pedestrian bridge in inner Melbourne and turn it into a tree-lined linear style park is hoped to bring a touch of New York to the city.

Sandridge Bridge, which connects Flinders Street Station with Southbank, would be landscaped with trees and plants to form a green link with the Yarra River under a Melbourne City Council plan, NewsCorp Australia reports.

Melbourne City Council Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has put the bridge back on the agenda after the Victorian government put plans on ice to update the bridge.

"Sandridge Bridge is a really interesting connect between the back of Flinders Street Station and Queensbridge Square," Mr Doyle told NewsCorp Australia.

"It could be a lovely north-south crossing of the river."
