Melb train drivers could strike over pay

Melbourne's train operators could stop work for two days after voting to take industrial action against Metro Trains.

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union members will take protected industrial action after negotiations over a new pay deal have stretched into a fourth month.

"(Metro's) profits have risen more than 45 per cent over the last three years yet Metro isn't prepared to make a reasonable offer to its staff," union secretary Luba Grigorovitch said on Friday.

Staff will meet on Monday to decide how to escalate their dispute with Metro, and options include work stoppages for up to 48 hours.

Other options include free travel days that will see staff leaving all myki barriers open, and refusing to check myki cards or issue infringement notices.

Reporting late trains and station announcements could also be banned.

Ms Grigorovitch said members understood the impact industrial action could have on the travelling public but negotiations had dragged on and this could be their only option.
