The Victorian electoral commissioner has asked to have Melbourne City councillor Brooke Wandin's election investigated after questions about her eligibility.

Ms Wandin became the first indigenous person elected to Melbourne City Council but resigned on Tuesday, saying her eligibility was being investigated.

Electoral Commissioner Warrick Gately on Friday asked the Municipal Electorial Tribunal to investigate and said his office would start planning for a countback.
