A man has been seriously injured after he was shot in a suburban Melbourne street in broad daylight.

The man, reportedly in his fifties, took himself to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper body and was later transferred to the Alfred Hospital, media reported.

"It's broad daylight. We're comforted only by the fact that parties are known to each other," Detective Sergeant Steven Boskovski said at the scene on Wednesday.

Officers swooped on an intersection at Carnegie about 2.15pm on Wednesday after reports somebody had been shot, but they couldn't find any victim.

Media reports suggested there had been a Molotov cocktail thrown during the assault.

The victim is in a stable condition at the Alfred Hospital and the injuries are not life-threatening.
