MELBOURNE, July 11 AAP - A man accused of stabbing his neighbour to death in Melbourne's north has been remanded in custody.

He spoke only to his lawyer and did not apply for bail during the brief hearing.

Police have previously confirmed the two men were neighbours and that there had been disputes between them in the past.

Mr Galgano suffered a stab wound to the chest during an alleged altercation at the corner of Murray and Gilbert roads in Preston on Friday evening.

He died at the scene.

Magistrate Alan Spillane remanded Papadimitriou in custody until a filing hearing on July 14.
