Victorian man jailed for violent murder, holding woman hostage

A Victorian man who killed his mate before stabbing a woman he was holding hostage, while demanding police give him the drug ice, has been jailed for at least 21 years.

Trevor Daryl Doherty, 47, was on Friday sentenced for murdering Christopher Stevens and the subsequent siege and stabbing.

A Victorian Supreme Court jury in May found Doherty guilty of Mr Stevens' murder, and he also pleaded guilty to four counts of false imprisonment and one charge of intentionally causing injury.

Doherty had invited Mr Stevens to stay at his Seaford home in December 2015.

"I accept that your offer to stay was made in good faith," Justice Terry Forrest said to Doherty.

But the pair had an argument on December 14, which turned violent.

"You stabbed him in the buttock, which caused him to bleed quite profusely," the judge continued.

Mr Stevens went to a neighbouring property and armed himself with three knives.

But a friend intervened and told Mr Stevens to put his weapons down, which he did.

Justice Forrest said Doherty and Mr Stevens had another "animated discussion" before Doherty stabbed Mr Stevens in the neck.

"Mr Stevens rapidly lost consciousness and subsequently died," the judge said.

The stab wound was six centimetres deep and sliced through the 45-year-old's jugular vein.

Afterwards, Doherty holed himself up in a drug house with other people and engaged in what Justice Forrest described as "violent, chaotic and bizarre" conduct.

During this time Doherty used heroin and took four people hostage.

He dragged one woman to the front door and held a knife to her throat while demanding police supply him with the illegal drug ice.

"She was screaming and begging you not to stab her," Justice Forrest said.

Doherty also yelled to police "one of you c**** is going to die".

Police shot him in the abdomen and thigh after he stabbed the woman.

Doherty managed to stagger back inside the house before police stormed the property and arrested him.

Justice Forrest said Doherty had bleak prospects of rehabilitation, jailing him for 25 years and six months, ordering that he must serve at least 21 years before being eligible for parole.
