A court case is progressing against a Malaysian man accused of smuggling 3.5kg of heroin into Melbourne on a flight from Kuala Lumpur.

Fariq Aldakhir Aqbal Omar appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday, aided by a Malaysian interpreter, and did not apply for bail.

He has been charged by the Australian Federal Police with importing and possessing a commercial quantity of heroin.
