Man faces court over Salvos shelter murder

Staff members and residents at a Salvation Army shelter in Melbourne have been shaken by an alleged stabbing murder at the centre.

A 43-year-old man died in hospital on Friday after he was allegedly stabbed at West Melbourne's Flagstaff crisis accommodation centre about 7.30am.

Jesse Phan, 44, was charged with murder and faced a brief hearing in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon. He did not apply for bail.

The Salvation Army said people at the crisis centre were rocked by the incident and they will be offered support.

"Residents and staff are obviously shaken by this unexpected incident," the organisation said in a statement.

The Flagstaff shelter is a state-wide crisis service providing accommodation, meals and welfare support for 64 men.

Phan is due to return to court on Monday.
