A man has died after collapsing following an apparent road rage incident in the car park of a VicRoads building in Melbourne’s east.

A 72-year-old man was found on the ground after an altercation with another man, aged 40, in the car park on Lakeside Drive in Burwood East.

But police said they were not treating the man’s death as suspicious and the younger man is being treated as a witness.

It is believed the deceased man, from Vermont South in the city’s east, died after a cardiac arrest.

“It’s quite a tragic incident,” Detective Leading Senior Constable Brendon Pollock said.

“At this point in time we believe he’s deceased from a heart attack.”

Mr Pollock confirmed the younger man was unlikely to face charges and is helping police.

“He’s shaken up, naturally,” he said.

The incident occurred after a minor collision between two vehicles at about 9.30am (AEDT).

Both drivers were reversing into separate parking spaces when their cars collided.

Police say the two drivers spoke and the older man grew aggressive towards the other man.

The younger man pushed the aggressor in the chest and entered the VicRoads building.

While he was inside, the older man collapsed and was found by other drivers.

Paramedics were unable to revive the man, who died at the scene.

Police are investigating whether the man had any preexisting medical conditions.

The car park was taped off and staff blocked from reaching their vehicles.

The incident occurred in a CCTV black spot and police have appealed for any witnesses to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
