Paramedics soon arrived, but were unable to revive Mr O’Donnell.

Among friends and family visiting the scene today was Jake Hewgill, who described Mr O’Donnell as a father figure.

"I am so broken over this,” he told 9NEWS.

"I loved him like a dad and he always wanted to help other people.

“He was a true friend with intentions to help no matter what, and he deserved a lot better than this."

The attack on Mr O’Donnell marks the third stabbing in Melbourne and Geelong in the last 48 hours.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
