Police have arrested and charged a man over the stabbing of a good samaritan who tried to stop a bag snatcher in Melbourne's north.

Bernard Oxenham intervened after a 64-year-old woman's handbag was stolen as she was getting into her car at Preston Market at around 2pm on June 12.

During the resulting confrontation Mr Oxenham, 37, was stabbed in the chest and received multiple cuts to his hands and fingers before his attacker fled.

Police said early on Thursday that Kane Anthony Larsen had been charged with intentionally cause serious injury, recklessly cause serious injury, intentionally cause injury, recklessly cause injury, theft and assault with a weapon.

The 42-year-old Hawthorn man will front the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
