Man arrested over Vic street shooting

A man is being questioned by homicide detectives over the shooting death of a half-naked man on a Geelong street.

The shirtless Norlane man, 36, was shot from a passing car on Anakie Road in Bell Post Hill about 11pm on Tuesday and died as horrified witnesses looked on.

Police say homicide detectives and members of the crack special operations group arrested a 22-year-old Lovely Banks man in Anakie Road, Bell Post Hill, on Thursday.

The man has been taken to Geelong police station for questioning.

"The 22-year-old man is currently assisting police with inquiries," a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

Before he died, the victim was seen arguing with a woman.

He became erratic, waving his hands at cars as he walked down the middle of the busy road, prompting many calls to triple zero.

Most drivers avoided him but police said a dark-coloured sedan stopped at the corner of Furner Ave and its occupants confronted the man.

Shortly afterwards a shot was fired from the car.

The car sped away, leaving the man wounded in the street.

Residents and police tried to keep the man alive until paramedics arrived but he died at the scene.

One woman told reporters she had been holding his hand as he died and that his last words were: "I'm bleeding to death and I can't breathe".

A neighbour told AAP there were often arguments at the property and cars came and went at all hours of the night.

Following the shooting, Sergeant Graham Ross said it was concerning that people were driving around with guns in the car.

At the time, the motive for the attack was unclear.
