A man has absconded from a Victorian psychiatric facility during accompanied leave by jumping into a river.

Darren Higgins, 25, who is serving a 12-month treatment order for assault and property offences at the Vahland House in Bendigo, jumped into the Murray River at 8pm last night.

He managed to swim to the other side of the bank and was last seen in the Barmah Forest.

He has been described as 180cm tall, with a medium build and dark hair.

He was last seen wearing black tracksuit pants and a white t-shirt.

Police are urging the public not to approach him if they see him.
