Luke Batty's death highlighted failings

A series of systematic failings and lost opportunities didn't protect Luke Batty from his father, but lessons learnt from his horrifying murder mean he didn't die in vain.

The 11-year-old was killed at cricket practice on February 12, 2014 at the hands of his mentally ill father Greg Anderson.

Victoria's coroner Ian Gray found that failings and delayed responses in the justice system and health department allowed Anderson to subject his son and partner Rosie Batty to years of abuse and irrational behaviour.

But when it came to blame, Judge Gray was very clear: "Mr Anderson and Mr Anderson alone was responsible for Luke's death."

Ms Batty said the findings did exactly what they set out to do - highlight systematic failings but not apportion personal blame.

Pressure is now on the state government to put the coroner's 29 recommendations in place.
