Less power for Vic police during protests

Victorian police will have less power to record protesters' names and move them on if a new bill passes state parliament.

Labor will attempt to repeal a number of the former coalition government's move-on laws, which gave police extra power during protests.

Legislation will be introduced when the Victorian parliament resumes on Tuesday, the first sitting week since Labor was elected in November.

Attorney-General Martin Pakula says repealing the laws will restore the balance between authorities and peaceful protesters.

"We have a right to protest in this state," he told Fairfax Radio on Tuesday.

"We don't think it's necessary to have move-on powers where people have their names recorded simply because you may obstruct traffic, or simply because you may impede someone from entering a building."

He said police would still have a range of powers to deal with protesters who breach the peace, act violently or trespass.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has labelled the move a stunt.
