Lawyer attack accused unwell: Vic court

A man charged over the serious assault of a female lawyer who was working at the royal commission into union corruption has been too unwell to attend court.

Benjamin George Robinson, 41, is accused of attacking and seriously injuring the 50-year-old lawyer as she walked through a Fitzroy car park last Thursday night.

The attack followed a day of royal commission hearings in Melbourne.

Robinson, from Fitzroy, was due in court on Thursday to face charges including intentionally causing serious injury but remained in a cell in the remand centre.

"He has been determined to be unfit to appear today by the doctor," his lawyer, Talei Richards from Legal Aid, told the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

Magistrate Simon Garnett remanded Robinson to appear on October 23.

The royal commission released a statement last week noting it was deeply distressed by the incident but it did not appear at this stage that the attack was related to the commission's inquiry.
