Last-ditch fight over Vic school funding

Victoria's poorest schoolchildren won't miss out on funding, despite a last minute pre-election bunfight.

Treasurer Michael O'Brien said Labor's election policy costings showed it would rip $60 million out of the education maintenance allowance.

"This is money that goes to schools to support poorer students who otherwise can't afford to necessarily participate," Mr O'Brien told reporters on Friday.

But Labor said their policy was to target children directly, not just pick the schools with the poorest demographics.

"Denis Napthine chose to cut EMA funding and attempted to dress up his cuts by stating there was unallocated funding for only specific schools," a Labor spokesman said.

Labor said it would provide $15.5 million for uniforms and shoes for struggling families and breakfast for 25,000 kids a day through the $13.5 million breakfast club program.

"Payments will go directly to the school but will be tied to the student. Families with Concession Cards will be eligible," the spokesman said.
