Beloved puppy killed in 'deeply disturbing' attack in Melbourne

The heartbroken owner of a puppy killed by an unknown person in Melbourne has spoken about coming home to find the aftermath of the 'deeply disturbing' attack.

Three-month-old staffy, named Boss was found dead in the backyard of the family home on Station Street in Lalor on September 30.

Police believe an unknown person gained access to the rear yard of the property and moved CCTV cameras, before Boss was killed.

"Boss had been viciously bashed or hit," Martin, the owner told media today.

"There was blood all over the backyard like he had tried to escape."

Victoria Police Detective Senior Constable Matt McKenzie said the attack was "deeply concerning and disturbing".

"Boss suffered significant head trauma and died as a result of those injuries," he said.

"I won't detail what happened next because it's truly distressing. But Boss' body was further seriously assaulted afterwards."

The other two puppies, who were also outside with Boss were unharmed.

Senior Constable McKenzie believed the attack was targeted and appealed for anyone with information in the community to come forward.

"Anyone who was travelling on Station Street on grand final day, I asked them to turn their minds back to that day," he said.

"And just think about if they remember any suspicious behaviours, persons or vehicles on Station Street in and around the Lalor train station."
