Two kayakers have been rescued after spending two hours clinging to a tree in the middle of the Yarra River in Melbourne.

The pair became stuck after their kayak hit a partially submerged tree and capsized at Warrandyte just before 11am on Friday.

The stricken pair subsequently swam a short distance to a specialist MFB marine rescue boat about 12.45pm and were returned to land.

Earlier this week a kayaker was treated for hypothermia after capsizing in Port Phillip Bay off Mentone and drifting more than 20 kilometres.
