A 58-year-old Japanese tourist lost in the Tasmanian wilderness survived overnight snow and sleet before being rescued.

The woman, who was part of a guided tour group, left her hotel at Cradle Mountain about 5pm on Sunday to go for a jog and three hours later when she had not returned, companions raised the alarm with police.

An overnight search, which included a helicopter, failed to find the woman.

But success came just before 9am on Monday when the chopper spotted her about 100 metres from a track.

A ground team was directed to her.

The woman was uninjured, but very chilly, and after being checked by paramedics has rejoined her group.

Temperatures in the area dipped to just one degree celsius, with light snow and sleet.

The woman had been wearing only lightweight walking gear.
