A crouched figure of a refugee wearing a life jacket will appear five metres tall in Melbourne's CBD.

The large-scale art installation, Inflatable Refugee, is the work of Belgian artist collective Schellekens and Peleman and will go on display on the banks of the Yarra River on Saturday.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle will visit the installation which has toured Italy, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden, and is in Melbourne ahead of World Refugee Day on June 20.
