Increased security in Vic after Brussels

More police will be monitoring Melbourne's streets and public events over the Easter weekend in the wake of the Brussels terror attacks.

Double the usual number of police attended the opening game of the AFL season at the MCG on Thursday night, with an increased police presence slated for much of the long weekend.

"These additional resources are ... all about keeping Victoria safe," Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters on Thursday.

The premier says there is no intelligence to suggest links between events in Europe and people living in Melbourne, but it is important to be vigilant.

More than 80,000 people attended Thursday's AFL season opener between Richmond and Carlton, with many fans urged to arrive earlier than usual to allow time for security and bag checks.

There will be an increased police presence during an A-League match at AAMI Park on Friday, and other AFL matches.

Police are also expected to attend a candlelight vigil organised by the Belgian Club Victoria at Federation Square in the CBD on Saturday night.
