A Melbourne driver allegedly caught six times over the legal limit told police she was an idiot and it was lucky she didn't kill someone.

The 48-year-old was stopped on Chapel Street at Blackburn about 8pm on Wednesday and allegedly returned a breath test reading of .313.

The reading was labelled as "insane" by Victoria Police Acting Chief Commissioner Shane Patton on Thursday.

"I don't know how much alcohol you'd have to consume to get to that level but to think that you would get into a car that is so irresponsible," Mr Patton said on 3AW.

"That's an insane reading isn't it really," he said.

The Burwood woman admitted she was an "idiot", her license was immediately suspended for 12 months and her vehicle was impounded.

Mr Patton urged drivers to take care on the roads because the holiday period was one of the riskiest for drivers.
