Vic hotline to address ice epidemic

Ice users can get the latest treatment information 24 hours a day with a new Victorian hotline.

Mental Health Minister Martin Foley says the line is part of the government's $45.5 million strategy to tackle Victoria's ice epidemic.

"Methylamphetamine is now the single largest referral to all of the alcohol and other drug services," Mr Foley said on Wednesday.

"Figures keep going up. I'd like to say that we've seen a plateau, but I suspect we haven't."

The line is operated by drug addiction treatment centre Turning Point, which has figures showing a 318 per cent increase in ice-related ambulance attendances from 2011 to 2012.

The hotline will put ice users in touch with treatment options and medical professionals.

Families of people affected and local GPs can also get information about the drug, what it can do, and where support is available.

The 1800 ICE ADVICE (1800 423 238) line is now open 24 hours a day.
