Wanted sex offender nabbed in Victoria

Police have captured a "high risk" registered sex offender who failed to notify authorities of his whereabouts.

Police on Thursday afternoon arrested Magot Machol, 27, in North Melbourne following a public appeal earlier in the day.

He is due to face Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Prior to his arrest, Machol was seen at a Pakenham shopping centre on Sunday and police received a tip on Wednesday that he may be at Moe in Gippsland.

"He's got violence in his prior convictions and sexual-related offences exacerbated by alcohol and we rate him as a high-risk offender," Superintendent Lauren Callaway told reporters in Melbourne on Thursday morning.

"He has an obligation to tell us where he lives, the car he drives and any contact he may have with someone under the age of 18."

He was last released from jail in September and had contacted police by phone in October, but hadn't been heard from since and was required to make contact in person.
