Human remains found at Vic property

Neighbours have been left rattled after suspected human remains were found in a Geelong backyard.

A resident discovered bones while excavating a property on Sparks Road at Norlane, in Geelong's north, Victoria Police confirmed on Wednesday.

The man initially thought the bones belonged to an animal but then discovered a skull covered in hair and took them to a police station on Tuesday, Nine news reports.

Neighbour Stephen Mckinnon told reporters he hadn't seen people at the property - near where the bones were found - for several months.

"It's shocking, the kids were pretty scared last night. They didn't want to go to sleep," he said.

"It's very very sad to hear that someone's bones were over there," another neighbour told Nine.

The bones will be sent to the coroner for examination while the homicide squad investigates.
