Homophobic Uber driver fired for abusing lesbian passengers

A homophobic Melbourne Uber driver has reportedly been fired after he was caught on tape vilifying his lesbian passengers – one of whom is an anti-bullying advocate.

Lucy Thomas and her partner were getting a lift home from Collingwood to Richmond with driver "John" when he started raving about the homoerotic nature of the AFL.

"The driver said he hated football because it was a bunch of 'faggots' jumping around and touching each other," Ms Thomas, who is the chief executive of anti-bullying body Project ROCKIT, told the Star Observer.

"I told him that I understood the spirit of what he was saying but that the word was deeply offensive to me and a lot of other people.

"He then asked us — why are you worried, are you gay?"

It was then that John turned on his fare, abusing Ms Thomas and her partner for their sexuality before threatening to turf them out of the vehicle.

"What, are you going to give me a one rating and make a complaint?" He can be heard saying on an audio recording made by Ms Thomas.

"And when I write my report about two faggots who don't like being called faggots, then what are they going to say?"

According to Ms Thomas, the answer from Uber was "you're fired".

"The person I spoke to at Uber was really empathetic and affirmed and how horrible the experience must have been for us," Ms Thomas, who also reported the matter to police, said.
