Former Essendon coach James Hird is being treated after a suspected poisoning overdose, it's been reported.

Ambulance Victoria were called to Hird's Toorak home about 10pm on Wednesday night for an "intentional poisoning overdose", the Seven Network reports.

An ambulance spokeswoman said she could not comment.
