Victorians in the state's north have endured their last day of above 40C weather as they welcome the cool change.

The temperature in Mildura hit a sweltering 44.4C on Saturday, it's fourth day straight of above 40C weather.

Temperatures had already dropped to 37C at 7.30pm in Mildura, a good omen for the predicted top of 25C on Sunday.

Townships along the NSW boarder haven't seen relief from the heat in days, with fire danger remaining very high with the addition of strong winds.

In the northeast, Wangaratta reached a top of 41.3C on Saturday and Albury reached 40.7C.

A cool change is expected to bring temperatures down to the mid 20s by Sunday with the occasional spot of rain.

Alternatively in Melbourne, conditions have been quite pleasant, only reaching a top of 24C on Saturday.
